“She’s (Kat) nice, fun to be with and annoying sometimes (ha!ha!ha!). We get along really well.” – Niño Barbers, Bayud Boutique Resort, General Luna, Siargao.
Right after she represented the country in the recent Miss World beauty pageant held in Sanya, China, last month, Katarina Rodriguez came home silently with no fanfare. Immediately, she went home directly to her family to be with them the whole holiday season.
“Actually, my whole family, had not been together after some years, so a big part of my quiet moments were spent with them. And I also took advantage of having no work and flew to Siargao a couple of times,” shared the beauty queen. “After the pageant, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. As always, I’m happy. I learned that what’s meant to be, will simply be. So long as you do your part you’ll know what’s yours and what isn’t.”
“As you know, the past two years, my life was so much immersed in the pageant scene. So, this time, I’m trying to reconnect to all my loved ones who were so patient with me in my journey,” she added.
During the international pageant, one the issues she had to deal with was the “Beauty with a Purpose” video that she prepared. It created a controversy because, accordingly, violated some limitations. And Katarina explained her side.
“The one who was originally handling my preparations I supposed wasn’t aware about the certain limits. But at the end of it, I still find it odd that none of the 120 candidates had their videos uploaded on the Miss World page,” she lamented.
“If I had known there were limitations of course I would have followed the rules. But to make a better video… that was never the point. The point was to think of a purpose bigger than yourself and to place your heart in that purpose. Marawi has me. Miss World or not, what we’ve initiated there is worth more than any crown,” she stressed.
On the lighter side, Katarina is so much attached with the sea. As she said, she always finds time to go to beach of she has no work.
“My love for the ocean started since I was a baby because my mother loves it. She loves the sand and swimming. I’m pretty sure I could swim before I could walk. My mom gave me my love for the sea,” she said. And what makes Siargao or Bayud (Boutique Resort, owned by the Barbers) in particular, so special?
“As their teaser ad goes… “Bayud…Your home on the island,” I think that perfectly sums up my connection to Bayud…that and Leo (the resort’s pet body/lifeguard). Is my heart in Bayud? My mom also taught me to bring my heart wherever I go. You have to take care of your heart because everything you do flows from it. My heart is in Bayud when I’m in Bayud,” she said.
Kat recalled how she got so close with Bayud. And she shared, “I first met Nino Barbers (Owner) when I went to Siargao. He asked me how I felt about the island and my exact words were…’it’s okay lang.’’ And that drove him crazy, but which I didn’t understand why, at that time. But when you’re in love with a place, you definitely want others to see what you see. Since then, we started bonding.”
Being a regular guest in the resort, we asked her if this is the start of a more serious relationship? “Well…it’s definitely been the start of something better,” she smiled. “We are quite close and he’s great. He makes me laugh and he teaches me a lot. I hope I’ve only been able to return all the goodness he’s given me.”
Is she ready to settle in Bayud? “Oh, that’s a funny question,” she replied. “Bayud is a resort. You’re not really meant to settle in a resort. But if I’m not replying to my messages or if I’m not active on social media, I fly to Siargao and you’ll find me in Bayud.”
As of now, Katrina is still weighing her options on her next move after Miss World. “Since winning Miss World-Philippines, I’ve been with Tito Arnold Vegafria, and he’s amazing. We just had a long meeting about our plans. I really can’t wait. Everything is still a…secret!” she said.
Incidentally, Bayud has become the vacation hub of some known personalities both in politics and entertainment business. During the holiday season, they were visited by power-couples, such as Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna and their daughter, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes (for two years in a row, with daughter), Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati (with their son), Solenn Heussaff and hubby Nico Bolzico, and the list goes on.
