What do Visitacion “Tetchie” Agbayani (Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism ’79), Salud Bumbum Asturias (Baron Travel Girl ‘79), Sabrina Artadi (Bb. Pilipinas-International ‘85 ), Tina Alcala (Miss Young Philippines ’85), Alice Dixson (Bb. Pilipinas-Internationhal ‘86), Lolie Enriquez (Bb. Piliinas-International ’87), and Jennifer Pingree (Bb. Pilipinas-Internatonal ‘89) have in common? Of course, all these beauty queens and now accomplished women were discovered by one of the most astute beauty queen discoverers, Philmoda’s big boss, Jojo Veloso.
Unknown to many, before he became a full-time showbiz manager and a talent discoverer, Philmoda’s big boss, Jojo Veloso was one of the original beauty queen makers. Even before Sabado Night’s Girl, Ina Raymundo became a household name, and Face of the Year was the biggest modeling search during the 90s, he already had an eye for beauty. And the names mentioned above were just a few of the beautiful women he discovered in the past.
After years of hiatus from showbiz, where he ran and served as Board Member in his home province (Biliran), Jojo decided to revive his showbiz connection, with the help of Boss Vic del Rosario (of Viva Films). And fortunately, he was able to restage the Face of the Year Search last year. And the top winners are now Viva artists. Aside from that, he also formed two new groups, a sing-and-dance male and female, the Bratboys and The Fabulous Girlfriends. Both groups are busy performing in mall shows and now preparing for their respective debut album.
Now that the country is fast becoming a beauty pageant hub (both local and international searches), Jojo decided to rekindle his first love…his penchant for discovering future beauty queens. And what better way to start his quest, but to discover a lady who can truly represent our country in the global pageant.
Meet Czar April Burgos, presently crowned Miss Tourism Ambassador Universe, held in Malaysia a month ago. A native of Isabela province, she’s 24 years old, stands 5’10’’ and a graduate from UP (Diliman) with a Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science. She will hopefully be the entry of Philmoda in next year’s Bb. Pilipinas search, if she will make it to the final screening to be held early next year.
An active sports enthusiast, April plays volleyball, fencing, lawn tennis and jujitsu. Her favorite hobbies include singing, drawing and sketching. And she plays the cello. In preparation for the screening, she’s busy toning her body with a daily work-out at the gym. A beauty and brain influenced by her politician grandparents, she will be running for Sanggunian Panlalawigan in the 2019 May elections.
Who knows, she will follow the footsteps of former beauty queens-turned-politicians and empowered women, like Yedda Marie Kittilsvedt-Romualdez (Bb. Pilipinas-International ’96), a congresswoman (Leyte), and Daisy Reyes (Bb. Pilipinas-World ’96), who was a number one councilor in Pateros for two terms before he ran for mayor last 2016 election, unfortunately she didn’t make it.
