“When I found out that the material was light, I accepted it right away because it was something fresh for me.”
Angelica Panganiban stars in ABS-CBN’s new morning soap titled Playhouse. This is considered her next big regular program after appearing in the hit prime time show “Pangako Sa ‘Yo where she shared stellar billing with the popular love team of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla and gave a sterling performance as Madam Claudia. But prior to this, she was offered the role played by Shaina Magdayao in the top-rating afternoon show Asintado, headlined by Julia Montes.
But this time, many are asking why she opted to do a material of lighter nature. “Well, coming from an emotionally draining program like Pangako Sa ‘Yo where my character was always angry with Kathryn and Daniel, plus Jodi (Sta. Maria), I wanted my next project to be different,” she explains. “I longed for something light that would serve as a balancing act.
“When Playhouse was pitched in to me, I thought it was a perfect respite from all the heavy dramatic stuff people usually see me do. At least, it’s a breath of fresh air for me, right? For the time being, I don’t want to do scenes where the locations are in warehouses (laughed). Playhouse offered something fresh so I accepted it right away,” she says.
In the show, she has a new leading man in the person of Zanjoe Marudo. “It’s my first time to work with him on a boob tube project. We’ve done a few films before but we are not screen partners. This time, we’re paired together which makes it exciting. It’s a totally new experience.”
In their latest offering, the two play husband and wife whose marriage is shaky. Angelica’s character Patty wants to seek an annulment. However, they are forced to stay together when they were assigned to look after an orphaned kid.
“The plot is really interesting. It’s comedy with a heart specially that lots of family values are shown in here. For sure, people will rollick in laughter and at the same time get touched.”
Angelica relates that she and Zanjoe worked hard to establish their on screen chemistry and it took time before they obtained it.
“That’s true! Admittedly, the initial taping sessions were longer. Direk Jeffrey Jeturian made sure that Zanjoe and I familiarize ourselves very well with our respective character. We also sought the help of the entire cast in making each character stand out. It’s actually group effort, teamwork not only among the cast members which also includes Donnie Pangilinan and Kisses Delavin but also on the side of the production, creative and the writers.
“I’m proud of the turn-out of our collaboration. Viewers can see and feel that in each scene that we do. I’m relieved that eventually, Zanjoe and I became relaxed with each other. Unlike the first few days when we were still stiff, the succeeding days witnessed how we became more and more comfortable with each other and it’s reflected in our scenes together,” she states.
Playhouse will be fielded in the daytime block. Is it just okay with her considering that her past starrers were aired on prime time?
“That’s not an issue actually. When it was presented to me, it was really pegged on daytime. I readily agreed because that timeslot is family-oriented. As I’ve said, it’s something new to me, the reason why it excites me to the hilt.” The critically-acclaimed Kapamilya actress revealed that she even felt more nervous when at one point management considered fielding the show on primetime.
“Oh yes! When it appeared that they didn’t know where to put us at first and considered the primetime block, I felt real nervous. I just didn’t react and waited for the verdict. Management perfectly knows what to do and I feel everything fell into its proper place in the end,” says Angelica.
