As of today, the Philippines ranks six in the medal standing at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In the ongoing 18th Asian Games in Jakarta (Indonesia), the country’s volleybelles were stunned by the strong force of the Thai team during the women’s volleyball opening game held at the GBK Sports Center. Led by volleyball star Alyssa Valdez, Jaja Santiago, Kim Kianna Dy, Mika Reyes, Abby Mariano and Denden Lazaro, they were out-scored for a 3-set defeat (22-25, 12-25, 15-25), giving Thailand its first win in the event.
The next game of the volleybelles will be on Tuesday (%:30 p.m. Manila time) against the mighty Japan. The Philippine team need to play and win three more games to advance to next knockout stage. Thailand is a bronze medalist the last Asian games held in Incheon, South Korea for years ago, and the reigning SEAG champ. A dominant force in the region, the Thai ladies will be showing their aggressiveness in the coming days.
On the other hand, Philippine taekwondo (poomsae) got a boost when the team led by Rodolfo Reyes, Jr., with Jordan Dominguez and Dustin Jacob won bronze medal of the team events, plus another bronze from the women’s team (Jana Dominique Oliva, Rina Babanto and Juvenile Faye Crisostomo).
The men’s trio bested Saudi Arabia in the first round and Iran during the quarterfinals. While the women’s team defeated Hong Kong (during Round of 16) and Indonesia during the semis. But both teams were defeated by their Chinese and Korean foes, respectively.
