To be one of the most acclaimed screen “contravidas,” I want that in the future, stars would look forward to be slapped by me.”
In the local entertainment field, the role of a screen villainess is as essential as the lead actress. To make a movie or soap opera strongly appealing, the two should be able to get both the sympathy and ire of the audience. The female lead would only become an ideal screen heroine if the “contravida” is very effective. The viewers like the stark contrast between the two characters on screen. Thus, the villainess role is a landmark part and hotly-coveted as well these days.
In the mold of Cherie Gil, Aiko Melendez, Gladys Reyes, Katrina Halili, Thea Tolentino and Ryza Cenon, there is a new screen “contravida” who became a hit with TV buffs of late, and she is Kyline Alcantara. She is the main antagonist of Bianca Umali in the hit GMA soap Kambal, Karibal. Viewers hate her for oppressing Bianca in the story and that only shows how effective she is as an actress.
An original talent of ABS-CBN, Kyline moved to the Kapuso ground in the last quarter of 2017 after she was cast in the currently airing drama-supernatural program that is doing very well in the ratings chart.
“Of course, it wasn’t easy during the initial stage,” Kyline admits. “As everyone knows, I was with the rival camp for the longest time. So I guess it’s just understandable if I felt awkward in my first days as a GMA talent. But all’s well now. From then on, I remarkably adjusted to my new environment!”
The competent young actress, who was part of “Star Circle Quest’s Magic Circle of 10” years back and did the soaps Ina, Kapatid, Anak, Lumayo Ka Man sa Akin, Pangako sa ‘Yo and Born For You, feels grateful to her fellow young stars in Kambal, Karibal for making her feel at ease gradually.
“That’s right! They welcomed me warmly and sincerely. I’m happy because I was able to build new friendships with Bianca, Miguel (Tanfelix), Pauline (Mendoza) and Jeric (Gonzales). They were the first ones to reach out to me since I’m basically shy. As days went by, we became more comfortable and closer with one another. They were able to see my funny side for one,” she shares.
Interestingly, how did she part ways with ABS-CBN? “Actually, my contract with them had ended,” she tells. “I’ve been a Kapamilya for seven years. A co-manager approached me when he knew that I’ve no more contract with ABS-CBN. He encouraged me to audition for GMA Artist Center. I liked the idea and consented because I didn’t want to lose job. I have an opportunity outside so I might as well grab it, right?
“Of course, it was a hard decision to make. I started with them. But what makes me happy about it is that there’s no bad blood between us when I left. I’m vocal in saying that I owe them a lot. They are instrumental why I’m here in the ‘biz. I learned a lot from them; from the discipline they’ve instilled in me as an artist. So I left with a light feeling.”
For Kyline, the network war doesn’t exist. “In the first place, I’m here to work. I consider ABS-CBN and GMA as just different territories in the whole showbiz world. I just switched places but the goal is the same: to work. I don’t see any conflict with that,” she says.
With the current success of Kambal, Karibal in the ratings game, the talented gal is both proud and excited.
“I’m grateful that viewers like our show. Their support is tremendous. That’s why all of us in the cast are doing our best to make each episode interesting and worth-watching. I hope they will continue to patronize our offering specially that we were given an extension until June. It’s simply amazing,” she shares.
She was able to catch the attention of the viewers that fast as a prime screen villainess, something that doesn’t happen all the time to other young stars.
“That’s why I’m so overwhelmed with all these positive turn-of-events in my career. I’m proud with my participation in Kambal, Karibal and is happy with its current triumph. I really hope our loyal viewers will support the soap opera until it wraps up. There are still lots of twists in the storyline which they will enjoy,” she ends.
